The waitress (Carla?) cleared our plates, and we sat with the last half of our beers in a brief, satiated silence as we both considered what to do next.
“What’s an average day like for you?” she asked.
“Hmmm,” I hmmm’ed. “Good question. An average day, I suppose would have to be a work day. Which means it is likely the day after a work day. So I’ll wake up late–one PM seems about average–crawl out of bed, and head to the couch. I’ll turn on the TV, grab my computer, and check my e-mail, facebook, bank account. I’ll do a crossword, or half of one. I may work out, or at least do some push-ups while watching tennis. I’ll probably make a To Do list–Laundry!, Clean the Kitchen, Bank!, Call So-and-So, and So-and-S0–and I’ll probably finish about half of it.
“Then I’ll take a shower, get cleaned up, and eat lunch. Either make something out of what I can find in the fridge and in my cabinets, or pick something up on my way to work. Feed and water the cat, lock up, turn off lights, and head to the bar. I’ll work nine hours, pouring beers and making small talk, and finish with a couple of snifters for myself. Drive home, check the mail, pet the cat, and charge my phone.
“Then I like to pour myself a beer, sit outside, read a book and smoke cigarettes. I’ll drink until I’ve had enough, read until my eyes start to droop, and go to bed. I’ll turn off the lights, swoosh some mouthwash, turn on the ceiling fan, and try to sleep. Then I’ll wake up in the morning and do it again.
“What’s a normal day like for you?”
